According to reviews I read, it seems ~500W *input* is enough even for high-end systems with two graphic cards. Given this, buying those 1K PSUs is not only a waste of money during purchase, but also afterwards due to lower efficiency because of lower utilization.
Like a previous commenter said, efficient and quiet PSUs would be far more interesting, but it looks like all the publicity goes to the KW models.
Maybe AnandTech should take a stance, not review PSUs that make no sense, and instead focus on efficient and quiet? If everyone follows, perhaps we'd get manufacturers to focus on useful products.
I'm thinking about getting one to put in my bedroom at night to keep it nice and toasty....
But really, this is up there in the stupid cuz' we can category. As mentioned in the article the only place this PSU would be practical is in exactly the area where redundency is paramount (cluster/server).
I'm sure its great to say we did it, but its just wasteful. Now I'd love to see a list of people who will be showing up at lan parties with one of these in their system....I'm sure they will get razz'd pretty badly.
more on that HTPC case? my current htpc is amd 690 based and its just sitting here in pirces. im looking for a nice case. so yeah moer htps cses please :)
All the manufacturers seem to be bragging about having xxxx Watt, but I'm not interested in that.
300 is enough for me. I just want a really efficient and quiet PSU. A passive cooled one. Looking at the market today, it seems like the last passive cooled PSUs were released 3 years ago. I'm sure if they tried, they would be able to make passive PSUs more efficient today than they were 3 years ago. So where the heck are those? Stoopid companies.
I'm still waiting for these case/psu companies to get a clue and have a properly vented setup. Why do I have a psu that has a horizontal vent out the back with a closed-top on the case? Seems pretty logical to me that the psu (be it passive or actively cooled) should have the intake at the side (as in the highest point in the case), and the outlet at the TOP with corresponding opening at the top of the case to let the hot air out. Put a piece of removable mesh or something to prevent dust from getting in.
I've seen some cases with huge 200mm fans on the top of the case, what I really want is a port hole on the top where the PSU is mounted, with a PSU that has its outlet also on the top. This would reduce the need for active cooling under all but the most demanding situations since the hottest air will have easy access to simply rise out of the case the way physics intended.
For SFF or low power/silent setups you wouldn't even need an intake case fan since the escaping heated air would cause a suction at the front (ideally at the base of the case for the coolest air).
Maybe I haven't looked around enough but comon, SOMEONE, make a PSU/case that would address this. Heck I'm about ready to start my own company to produce these!
Did you read the NesteQ comments? Semi-passive sounds like a good compromise: if you don't break a certain threshold, you get pure silence. It sounds like they're working on US partners right now, so I'm definitely interested to see where they go.
Just an addendum, I recall quite a few people experiencing failures with purely passive designs. If there's no airflow at all (i.e. no case fans or other fans), temperatures can and do get out of control. Without the potential to activate a failsafe fan to cool things down, you run a risk of overheating and failure. Sure, it fails silently, but I think most people would prefer a little occasional noise just to be safe.
yes I understood the comments, I was just referring to the fact that many people may be selling their 300w antec phantoms or 500w antec phantoms (which has a fan BTW) because of the belief that they need more power. This would allow someone to score these used psu's CHEAP.
I think for psu manufactuers they have to always think of worst case scenario's so even a 300w fanless psu has to work well in the middle of arizona with no AC i think. If you live somewhere cooler, the chances of it overheating are much less?
the antec 300w was completely passive AFAIK and through a quick google search there seems to be a silentX model the is supposedly 450w completely passive.
zalman has some psu's that have heatpipe heatsinks inside but they also include a fan.
I think also part of the problem is that passive psu's require a premium price, people willing to pay premium price for a psu are sadly people that only run high end systems. Therefore require more POWER (or at least the perception of more power) and therefore the efficient passive psu's have stagnated.
The thumbnails are all standardized from our gallery feature (first added for CES 2008). If you go into the galleries, you can get a better view of the images, naturally, and they won't be stretched/skewed. The galleries are really good for trade shows, as they provide us with a to quickly get images on the site without the need to manually resize and crop each image, plus create a thumbnail, hyperlinks, etc. They are not "perfect" but there's a need to balance functionality with rapid delivery of content and ease of use.
I think the point is that they're inadequate, should be larger and/or an (imaging editor command) softend before resized, but ideally in the broadband age just presented in a more realestate-appropriate resolution. If I wanted thumbnails I'd do a google image search. Remember, most people today aren't running 1024x768 resolution anymore.

Silverstone need to have a real re-think on the Sugo 04, that rounded facia is awful. In fact the only thing I would change to the current model is the need for a stealth drive.
