Im a self build Virgin - but I'm going in at the deep end. Intel's site makes their Dual Core stuff sound awsome!(a) Is it?(b)Should I look to spend my cash elsewhere when considering a motherboard/processor?

This board is fine for stock performance and if you get rev-0304 it works very well with Core 2 Duo.

Does this board support dolby digital live in the sigmatel audio chipset? I'm looking to replace my old SoundStorm setup.

Also, does Intel High Definition = Dolby Digital Live support?
  • neilfeier - Wednesday, February 22, 2006 - link

Unlike most users of this motherboard that want to use the dual x8 PCIe slots for graphics, I want to use them for benchmarking a pair of x4 data acquisition boards we are developing. I want to test max rates to and from memory, as well as peer-to-peer transfers between the two boards (assuming the MCH allows this).

So my question is: Do you think I can I put a x16 or x8 PCIe graphics card in the third x4 PCIe slot hanging off the south bridge? I don't care about graphics performance too much, I just want a dual monitor card that will work in that slot and leave the main two slots free.

And ideas on this would be helpful. Thanks!

I will try it this weekend and report back.

Thanks Gary, I anxiously await the results of your experiment.

    Hi Neil,

I had video working in this slot. I updated to the new bios release today and will test the performance in a couple of days.

    Thanks,
    Gary

    Neil,

Performance is average but it works.

error! That's not how pcie works! pcie is always full duplex, and never single-ended!

Actually, depending upon the device PCI-E does support single-ended transfers. I probably should have worded my statement differently.

It's pretty sad Garys great article is'nt being read more - only 16 replies almost two days later - he can blame intel and thier non-exciting chips ATM.
  • Gary Key - Friday, January 27, 2006 - link

I should have put "Conroe Comes to Town" in the headline. ;-) At least the board is showing the 1333 fsb setting, hint, hint. Intel's products are a little mundane at the moment but at least we have 20 replies now, anything less and I owed my dog a Big Mac.

Do you guys plan on doing a 975X motherboard roundup in the future? If so, when is it going to be ready?

We have three more 975x boards to review. I estimate in about three weeks the roundup will be ready.
  • danidentity - Thursday, January 26, 2006 - link

Thanks Gary. Also, is there any word on whether 975X will support Conroe?

We continue to ask this question. As soon as we have an answer it will be front page news. :-) This board officially supports the 1333 fsb that we will see on product launches this summer but whether they will respin the 975x or not is up in the air right now.

The lack of performance, specialy when compared to an AMD similarly priced system should be compensated with a richer array of features. Looks like intel failed at that. Couple that with a higher energy bill, hotter/noisier computer and there you may explain why so many people now have AMD systems. For me, my last intel PC was a Pentium III. It was good for over 7 years, went from my home to my office untill a cheaply configured Sempron recently put it out of it's duties.

Can enyone tell me why? Is this "William Shakespeare inside" some spiner's new trend? And while we're talking about intel's marketing strategy what's all the hype with this viiv thang?

Professional image versus immaturity. Anandtech has a professional image and likely wants to maintain it.

This board is pretty pitiful, IMO, when several other solutions out there can outpace it. Unless the board is offered cheaper than the competition, I see no reason to buy it.
  • JarredWalton - Thursday, January 26, 2006 - link

Intel's proven reliability and support. Some people will happily give up 10% or more performance just for a major name like Intel. I'm not one of them, but they do exist.... :)
  • yacoub - Friday, January 27, 2006 - link

But you pay a lot more for it...
  • Zebo - Friday, January 27, 2006 - link

No knowledgeable computer hardware expert seriously believes that there is enough of a stability difference between the platforms to warrant a scientific comparison or research study by an objective outsider. Most "issues" stem from OE or bloated buggy SW and drivers, simple as that - not the hardware itself.

Toms tries such a comparison but as you know a sample size of one is'nt very scientific so we'll discount intels 11 reboots two Asus boards, two intel boards, one gigabit board to AMD's 0 reboots in the stress test.:D:)
  • Zebo - Friday, January 27, 2006 - link

Or should I say where's the proof over anything else? Sounds like urban legend to me. Something the intel boys claim with almost programed resposivness then stop replying in that thread once asked for proof.

Excuse my ignorance, is Bad Axe a new american slang word?
  • LoneWolf15 - Thursday, January 26, 2006 - link

"Bad Axe" is also a city in the state of Michigan.

That they chose to call this (or anything else) "Bad Axe" will be both the funniest and saddest thing I read all day.
  • JarredWalton - Thursday, January 26, 2006 - link

I think it's a play off of "Bad Ass" - say it fast and "axe" sounds a lot like "ass" to me. Basically, it was a codename from Intel designed to sound cool. Love it or hate it, that's what they used. Intel has geeks working there too, it seems! :)

I really wanted this board to be a SLI-screamer. I guess that is not the case. Next processor will be an AMD.
